Can you judge ostumo? These were the words that author Gail Carson Levine signed to my 7 year old daughter in her copy of FAIREST. We were both excited to find out exactly what this meant and you will be too when you read this fun retelling of the Snow White story. Set in the same world as the wonderful ELLA ENCHANTED the book follows the life of Aza, whose pale skin, blood red lips, and dark hair do not make her the fairest in all the land. But as one can not judge a book by its cover, we find that one can not judge a person by their looks. This book teaches that it really is what is inside that counts. A great story for young girls especially in todays day and age.
My only complaint about this book was that I read it out loud to my daughter and while it is fun and has a great moral, there are a lot of names that are hard to pronounce and I found myself stumbling more than once. Also, I was bothered by the songs, as they did not rhyme, but my daughter loved them because she thought it was fun to read italics. I would probably recommend this book to girls age 10 and older. So if you are looking for a fun and lighthearted read, go ahead and try it, maybe you too can judge ostumo.

Do you think it would be ok for an older Elem class? I really enjoy reading out loud for my students when I am interning but most of the books that I have read myself, even ones that are more children's than YA make me uncomfortable. It is hard to find good, acceptable lit. when some parents will not even let their 10-12 yr olds read Harry Potter. So far I have had the most success with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (though some have complained even about this)
I think it would be. I love Children's lit and read out loud to my kids every night after they have read to me. This year we did ALCATREZ VRS THE EVIL LIBRARIANS which is great for girls and boys. Now We are reading THE BOOK OF THREE. Our goal is to make it through the whole Black Cauldren Series. If you ever need ideas I have a million of great children's boks.
I ordered Fairest and a book that the author wrote about writing. Thought it might come in handy in my "How to Teach L.A." class. We are mostly woring on the writing process since we already have three stand alone reading classes. Thanks for the recommendation.
